Dr. Mario P. Vecchi is Senior Vice President, AOL Global Technologies. He is
responsible for managing AOL's international technology efforts, including
software development, network and system operations, support and financial
systems. The primary operations of AOL Global Technologies are in Ireland and
India, and initiating operations in China, with support teams in the US. In this
position, Dr. Vecchi manages a total global workforce of about 1,000 engineers
and staff.
Previously, Dr. Vecchi held the position of Senior Vice President, AOL
International Development, where he was responsible for technology and
development of AOL products internationally. Dr. Vecchi's primary location was
in Dublin, Ireland, and he managed development centers in Dublin and India. In
this role, he was responsible was the creation of the Bangalore Development
Center, which started from a concept in November 2003, and grew to an
engineering staff of more than 350 by the 4Q'05.
At AOL since 1998, he held the position of Senior Vice President, AOL
Services Development, where he was responsible for the engineering and quality
assurance teams that delivered the latest AOL client "AOL 9.0 Optimized" in July
2003. Previously, Dr. Vecchi was Vice President, AOL Consumer Electronics
Development, where he was responsible for technology and development of AOL
products for the consumer market (interactive television, wireless, PDAs,
Internet appliances, game platforms). Earlier, as Vice President, AOL Broadband
Development and Vice President, AOL Technology Development, he worked to define
the strategic directions of the company towards the deployment of new services
and technologies. His activities have included new access technologies
(broadband, wireless, home networking), new software technologies (search,
e-commerce, UI, etc.) and new technologies for multimedia online applications
(streaming media, 3D rendering, etc.). Dr. Vecchi is interested in the
deployment of new digital services applications to residential users, and in the
integration of data, interactive video entertainment and telephony to multiple -
fixed and mobile - personal appliances.
Dr. Vecchi was one of the founders of the Road Runner Group (Time Warner
Cable) in 1994, and Senior Vice President, Chief Technology Officer, a venture
that pioneered the development of cablemodem technologies to provide broadband
Internet data services. He was Senior Vice President, Advanced Technologies of
ServiceCo, the Road Runner joint venture between Time Warner, MediaOne,
Microsoft and Compaq, prior to joining AOL. Dr. Vecchi was Vice President,
Network Engineering at Time Warner Cable, working on the Orlando Full Service
Network Project. He worked at Cable Labs for a short interval as Vice President,
Network Architecture Design and Development.
Dr. Vecchi was at Bell Communications Research (Bellcore, now Telcordia),
Morristown, NJ. from 1986 to 1993, working in the Applied Research area. He
contributed to several pioneering broadband communications technologies during
those years, including dense WDM and optical switching, gigabit networking (ATM
and SONET), network survivability, broadband multimedia services, and IP next
generation.
Prior to that, he was the Head of the Semiconductors Laboratory of the
Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas, Chairman of the Electrical
Engineering Department at the Universidad Metropolitana in Caracas, Venezuela.
In 1982, Dr. Vecchi was the founder and Managing Director of XYNERTEK C.A., a
venture company that designed and manufactured personal computers in Venezuela.
Dr. Vecchi was visiting scientist at the IBM Watson Research Center, where he
was co-author of the seminal concept of "simulated annealing" optimization. He
has published more than 60 technical and research papers.
Dr. Vecchi holds Ph.D., E.E., and S.M. degrees from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, received his B.S. degree from Cornell University and
the professional engineering degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela.
Distinctions he has received include the Order Andres Bello in Venezuela. He is
a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and
Member of the ACM.
